Outing myself... as an author
Sep. 13th, 2009 08:43 amFor the longest time, I chose to dissociate the two halves of my writing brain in the eyes of the world—sort of like a professional multiple-personality disorder. Pretty much everyone who knows me already knew about the non-fiction side of my brain, but because that was all about work and formal stuff, I could never quite bring myself to let it publicly share space with the creative side of my brain.
The solution, as you'll see if you follow these links, was to unite the two parts of my brain in a single Web site—in short, to publicly acknowledge that I also write fiction, and enjoy it. If that scares away any clients, so much the better; it'll leave more time for writing. As "outings" go, this is pretty tame, but it still took some doing.
The two hemispheres are still separate rather than fully integrated, but at least they now share a metaphorical skull. Here's hoping they'll be good neighbors, and not in the "fairies who must be pacified lest they sour the milk" type either—with luck, more in the BBC sitcom sense.
In the last several months, I've been spending a lot of time being frustrated about the lack of time to write fiction, and this eventually led me to unsubscribe from all the discussion groups I belonged to. I miss them a lot, but it has freed up some time for things like this blog, and in coming weeks, as my workflow evens out, I'll get back to writing more. In the meantime, have a look at my fiction site if you've got some time to kill and have time for a good story or two.
