For me, the wonderful part of interacting with other people comes from three kinds of looking: in different directions, so each of you sees and comes to understand different things; in the same direction, so you can compare notes and learn what you missed; and in each other's eyes, so you better understand both the other person and yourself, through your reflection in their eyes. This is a pretty good recipe for a successful long-term love, but it also works well for family, friends, and colleagues.

One of the things I love about working with people from other cultures and other fields of study is how these three kinds of looking expand my view of the world and make it more profound. But the tricky bit about looking is that you have to be willing to learn how to see.
