Word's spell checker
Jan. 26th, 2014 01:25 pmIn helping a friend with the book he's writing to help Japanese authors publish their manuscripts in journals, I had a bit of fun dealing with his description of the spellcheck function.
About Microsoft Word's spellchecker, he wrote: "The spelling checker is your friend." After briefly sputtering incoherently, I came up with the following review comment: "No, it’s really not. It's an implacable enemy. At best, it’s like a leashed snake: in trained hands, you can occasionally stop it from biting you, but it will eventually wiggle out of the leash and envenom you."
That's a bit of an exaggeration, but only a bit. It appalls me that Wordstar had a better and more reliable spellcheck 30 years ago. Seriously, guys... aren't you embarrassed?
