Too many books, redux

Just came across this charming note in a quotations service I subscribe to:

Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky,

Sadly, it's coming to an "us or them" point for me, Shoshanna, and our books. We've seriously considered getting some of those sliding bookshelves with big cranks (what they call "mobile aisle shelving") or one of those floor-to-ceiling deals (complete with ladders on wheels) so we can continue to coexist with our books.

You probably don't have physical time to read them during your remaining lifespan. Pick the best of breed and dump the rest.

Too true. That's basically what we've been doing: we pick up books that we think we'd like to read, then they get bumped to the bottom of the list when we discover books that are more worth reading.

This is probably the best argument in favor of cloning: divide up the task of reading betwixt the original and the clones, then have a weekly seminar in which each person reports back the highlights.

I've always dreamed of living in a house big enough to have a library with floor-to-ceiling shelves and a ladder on wheels. But if I can't do that, I'd love to see photos if you two do it.

Strictly speaking, the goal of the floor-to-ceiling shelves is to free up space, not use it up. So that kind of shelves would actually save space, all else being equal.

Should it ever come to pass, we'll definitely blog it and provide photos. But it won't be soon, in all likelihood. More's the pity!

Laurence has finally ceded the futility of curbing my a/d/d/i/c/t/i/o/n/ habit. I caught him staring into space the other day and he confessed to pondering bookshelf expansion plans.
